This road test, spbo much clear sailing as they finish their season against San Diego State and a terrible New Mexico team. They’ll be 20 plus point favorites in both. On the season, TCU has built up BCS points as their resume shows two quality convincing wins over Oregon State and Baylor. A win here in Utah and one of the top two teams losing down the stretch and TCU might be able to build its case to play in a BCS game or possibly the National Championship game.

For Utah their case isn’t nearly as strong as TCU’s as they have only one decent win so far this season, an opening week 27-24 home win over Pittsburgh who is only 5-3 on the season and play in the weak Big East. Also ahead for Utah is a road game next week at Notre Dame which will not be an easy win even though the Fighting Irish are in the midst of another down year.

TCU warmed up for this game by going to Las Vegas and pounding UNLV 48-6. Their defense once again dominated as they allowed only 197 total yards. On the season TCU is allowing only 8.7 points per game and 217 total yards per contest.

TCU has been a disappointment to college football bettors as they come into this game with a so-so 5-4 against the spread record. However, they are always a good team to play under as they have gone under the betting total in 6 of their 8 games.

The Utes may have been caught looking ahead last week when they almost got tripped up by Air Force. They ended up winning the game 28-23 but failed to cover the betting line as 6.5 point favorites. That game snapped their perfect 6-0-1 record against the point spread. In that Air Force game, Utah was very fortunate as they were out gained by the Fly Boys and were the beneficiaries of five Air Force turnovers.

Last year Utah was no competition for this TCU team as they went into Fort Worth and were drilled by the Horned Frogs 55-28. However, the year before here in Salt Lake, the Utes beat TCU 13-10 as 1.5-point dogs.

The Sportsbooks like TCU in this game as they have installed the Frogs as generous 5-point favorites on the betting line. On paper that looks like the right line considering the teams’ schedules, margin of victory, and the fact that Utah could have lost last week. However, they don’t play these games on paper. It’s tough to play against Utah as an underdog of this price as they are 24-10 (70%) against the betting line as dogs of 3.5-10 points. But TCU is a money machine in conference games posting a 15-6 against the betting line record versus Mountain West opponents.
